ALA General Meeting
November 10, 2003: Minutes
- Need
to stress that before any of the committees commit to spending any funds,
they need to check with their liaison so that the board can be informed
and vote on the expenditure.
- If
your committee is planning a program or presentation, be sure to inform
the board liaison as soon as possible so that she/he can check the
calendar for possible time conflicts before the time/date is confirmed and
publicized.
- Chairs
need to be the ones to provide the text for flyers if it is within two
weeks of the actual event. We will format and post, but we won’t be able to create the flyers without your
assistance so close to the date. We are renegotiating the publicity
officers’ duties currently, so this is subject to change.
- Committee reports:
- Lecture:
- On November 13 from 12-1 in room 126 will be the Zimmerman lecture.
- Terry suggested that committees also post the events on the GSLIS calendar so that any faculty or staff interested in attending would be notified of the event
- The next committee meeting will be on Monday, November 17 at 6pm in the Espresso cafe by the Undergrad library
- Community Outreach:
- Volunteers will be going to the Champaign County Nursing Home in Urbana for a Coffee Break on Sat, 11/15 at 9:15 am, contact committee if interested in attending.
- The next meeting will be in GSLIS room 109 at 4 pm on Wednesday, November 12 to discuss other event ideas
- Opportunities to volunteer at the Humane Society were discussed.
- Terry requested that any and all committees hosting events check out a digital camera from ITO to document the event
- LEEP:
- A LEEP student in Maine has shown some interest in the committee and we have begun to receive responses/feedback from some other LEEPers
- We want to find out how many LEEPers will be attending Midwinter and perhaps find a way to meet up out there
- We would also like to invite any Chicago-area LEEPers to join us on any field trips or events we have in the area.
- We are trying to anticipate LEEPers’ requests and archive any speakers for their benefit
- Professional Development:
- Curt McKay is doing his Interviewing talk on Thursday, November 13 from 5-7:30 in room 126.
- We are tentatively scheduling Leigh for her Salary Negotiation talk for next week sometime

- We are also trying to organize a talk about ALA midwinter and specifically what to expect at the Placement Center.

- Tshirt sale ends on Friday, November 14.
- Distribution of goods will be December 3-5
- We need volunteers to sign up to staff the table, especially Friday!

- Fieldtrip:
- The trip to Conservation/Preservation lab on 28 October went well, 8 people attended.

- Social:
- Have the hall rented at the campus Y for Friday, December 12.

- Trying to get pricing on food (discussed budget allotted for this event)
- Discussion about food (potluck? Catered?, etc)
- Will post announcement for next committee meeting to the boards as well as to the SLA and ASIST boards so that members from the various groups can have input on joint party.
- Email Eric Sizemore at sizemore[at]soltec[dot]net with ideas/suggestions. He has suggested a Chinese Buffet and dessert potluck.
- Conference:
- Have a website up and running with information about Midwinter/San Diego
- To get to the room-share bulletin board, look at the listing for all classes for fall semester and go into lis000ala.
- Any committee can have a public board such as this created for them, but be advised that access is not limited solely to committee members
- Conference committee still working on getting funds to pay for the Midwinter registration fees for students.
- We will need a definite number of all who are planning on attending (we will send out an email telling people who/by when to contact with this information)
- Keep any and all paper involved in expenditure in order to be reimbursed!
- International Committee:
- We had an event with SLA on 29 October. Barbara Ford spoke and about 30 people attended. It went well. Barbara’s handouts on how to find jobs internationally are posted on the SLA website.
- Terry has a web page about international librarianship which Kevin Hawkins and Sujin Huggins are currently working on updating
- Upcoming Events include:
- Presentation by the Mortensen associates over a lunch hour on their respective countries and librarianship there—either Dec 3 or 4.
- Next semester hoping to host a panel of International students with an informal meet-n-greet afterwards.
- Next semester hoping to have a panel about working / finding jobs abroad.
- ACRL:
- The next meeting will be either Friday 11/14 or Monday 11/17.
- Looking to come up with the final draft of the constitution/bylaw revisions to submit to the Board by December 4th.
- While the constitution is open to revision, if anyone has suggestions for changes, let us know now.
- Email Gretchen with ideas/suggestions at ggould[at]uiuc[dot]edu ; please include ACRL in the subject line.
- All committees, please try to get digital camera to document events, can do so from ITO.
- Treasurer info: Doing fine. If the committees are doing anything financially, please make sure that the Board is notified for a vote of approval. Keep those receipts and make sure they’re itemized!!!!
- Business Cards:
- We can get business cards through the U of I in increments of 100-250 in a 3-4 day turnaround period. It costs $10 for 100 cards.
- The only way to legally get the bar-I is through the university
- You can find the links to the forms through the University Printing Office page (go to online ordering and then to order business cards)
- Can only use campus address as your address (and be sure to include the mail code MC-493, which will direct it to our student folders)
- As a student order, you’ll have to go to the printing office to pick cards up, will not get any proofs (make sure no spelling errors when you submit!) and need to pay with check or credit card.
That’s it. Next meeting will be December 8 in room 126 at 5 pm. We’ll talk about the Midwinter Conference in San Diego. It will be our last meeting of the semester!
