ALA General Meeting

October 13, 2003: Minutes

Welcome! Meetings are on the second Monday of every month for this semester. Anyone is free to join any committee at any time. Simply contact board members (ala[at]alexia[dot]lis[dot]uiuc[dot]edu), post a message on the ALA bulletin board or contact any of the committee chairs.

1. Committee Reports:
1. Field trip:
1. Interested in looking into the Chicago area
2. Looking to meet within a week and find dates for possible field trip outings.
2. Fundraising:
1. 8 entries are posted on the website for the Tshirt contest. Voting has begun and closes on Tuesday the 21st of October.
3. Lecture:
1. Will meet on Tuesday from 5-6
4. ACRL:
1. met last week and have some proposed amendments for the constitution. Next step is to write the bylaws, which fill in the details of the constitution.
5. Community Outreach:
1. Will meet on Wed. at 4 in GSLIS 109
6. LEEP:
1. Diana attended LEEP dinner and is trying to assess LEEP interest. Most are professionals in the field already.
7. Conference:
1. If you know you're going to the Midwinter Conference, email katie (reinert[at]uiuc[dot]edu) or helen (hejny[at]uiuc[dot]edu) by Wed 15 October (we're trying to apply for SORF funds to cover people's registration cost and need to apply early for funds)
2. Will have a website up with general information about Midwinter which will be linked from the ALA chapter website
3. Hope to use the web and Bulletin Board as information stop for people wanting to share rooms, etc.
4. for big conferences like this, it's good to plan the hotel rooms even up to a year and a half prior!
5. maybe the conference committee can look into reserving a block of rooms for ALA annual to be held at the Orlando Convention Center in June.
6. Can check San Diego conference center website for hotels in the are for midwinter hotel info.
8. International:
1. co-sponsoring Barbara Ford's talk on October 29th from 1-2 with SLA
2. Waiting to hear about the international librarians' timeline to put something together with Mortensen center.
3. Want to do a sort of meet and greet with the international students next semester
9. Professional Development:
1. want to maybe contact Leigh Estabrook to do a salary negotiation or Curt for an Interviewing workshop before December grads leave
2. Can listen to all in archives
3. Talk to Susan Barrick about utilizing the Alumni network at GSLIS
2. Treasurer's report:
1. SORF money for reimbursing ALA fees: we have one request for the semester that we're working on, start thinking if your committee will need funds and ask EARLY!
2. We have voted to give $200 to ASIST to support/co-sponsor their TEI workshop

*Lisa Hinchliffe will be giving a presentation on Academic interviewing…still in need of a committee to host.

*Get electronic or print version of any flyers to Board Liaison for any events

*General note to all: please post the date for any committee meetings on the general ALA bulletin board so any interested parties can attend

If people can't make the meetings, they can still get involved through the committees!!!!!!!!
