ALA General Meeting

September 29, 2003: Minutes

  1. Terry Weech: Introduced self as faculty advisor to ALA student group. Reminded students that their participation is what makes things work. The student chapter is the students plus the board!
  2. Rudy
    1. Passed around attendance sheet requesting that all present sign in.
    2. Introduced self, saying that her job as president is basically making sure that everything gets done that we want accomplished this year.
      1. Wants to be sure everyone’s needs are met
      2. Any ideas? Talk to Rudy
      3. We’re in a great position this year budgetary-wise, so we can do great things
      4. The committee sheets are up at the front table, sign up for any committee you’re interested in and the chairs will be contacted.
  3. Board Members:
    1. Rachael Rohlf: talk to Rachael about SORF funds (free money!), liaison to ACRL and Social committees
    2. Tim Donohue: webmaster (electronic publicity officer), if anyone needs anything posted on the website or to the board or listserv, contact Tim; liason to Fundraising and Field Trip committees
    3. Diana Thompson: Vice President, there to help the entire board and others
    4. Sarah Dutelle: Secretary
    5. Katie Reinert: Print Publicity Officer, any print flyers needed for upcoming events, speak to Katie. Also liaison to International and Conference committees

  4. Committees: Overview, Liaisons, and Details
    1. Lecture Committee: Rudy Leon
      1. Still in need of a chair
      2. Responsible for inviting speakers to come to us
      3. Can reach a bit further this year, as we have more funds
      4. We have alumni all over, may do to take advantage of that
    2. Development: Sarah Dutelle
      1. Still need chair
      2. This committee sets up workshops such as resume, salary negotiation, etc, all in the interest of informing students interested in learning about professional development opportunities
    3. LEEP: Diana Thompson
      1. Need to get the Distance Education students involved
      2. Open to ideas on how to do this
      3. LEEPers will be here wed, Oct 1 to the weekend
      4. Trying to find ways to get information out to them and get them involved
    4. Outreach: Diana Thompson
      1. Get GSLIS involved in the Champaign-Urbana communities
      2. We’re an amazing resource for the two towns
      3. Places could use our help and it would give us great experience and contacts
    5. Field Trips: Tim Donohue
      1. Fun things to do for GSLISers (last year they organized trips to IL. State, up to Chicago, etc)
      2. Any library within the area (perhaps Chicago or St. Louis) may be manageable
      3. Chair position still open
    6. ACRL interest: Rudy Leon
      1. The faculty, library and ACRL are all excited for us to create the Alpha Student division of ACRL.
      2. Want to rewrite the constitution and bylaws in order to establish the group.
    7. Social Committee: Rachel Rohlf
      1. This group needs to get started on the Holiday Party (usually sponsored with other two student groups). Need to figure out the where and when (perhaps the Y?)
      2. Need to hit the ground running and make decisions quickly
    8. Fundraising: Tim Donohue
      1. Amanda Zoller as Chair reports: the first meeting for this committee will be at 6:00 on 9/30 in room 109 GSLIS.
      2. The t-shirt design competition submission deadline will be October 13, 2003.
      3. Old designs will be displayed in the LRL
    9. Conference committee: Katie Reinert
      1. This committee is still in need of a chair
      2. We need to start moving if we want to reserve a block of rooms for Midwinter
      3. Some people have found cheap airfare from Champaign and Chicago out to San Diego for MidWinter
  5. Upcoming Events:
    1. Midwinter will be in San Diego January 9-14 at the Convention Center
      1. Registration starts October 1
      2. Advance Registration is $33; onsite is $63 for students
      3. The October edition of American Libraries should have Conference information
      4. The Conference Committee can apply for SORF funds to help members pay for Registration costs for midwinter
      5. There will be a placement center; and the conference is mostly committee meetings, so it is a good time to go to a conference if it is your first: less overwhelming!
    2. LEEP Dinner
      1. Sat 6:30-8:30 at the YMCA
      2. Great opportunity to try to break down barriers between “us” and “them”
      3. We want to have an ALA table there as outreach
      4. Contact Rae Montegue to RSVP by Oct 1
  6. Questions/Misc.
    1. Go to the ALA website and join ALA at a student rate
    2. Check with library association for the particular state that interests you, you can sometimes join the state library association as well
    3. Membership sometimes takes 3-4 months to kick in, so if you plan to go to ALA midwinter, you’ll need to sign up soon and get your membership card and #.
