ALA General Meeting
March 31, 2004: Minutes
Welcome by president with an invitation to vote on both the changes to the Constitution and the Bylaws with a special note made: There is a revision in Bylaws Article I Section I. Item C has been added, and provides procedure for the dissolution of divisions. The text is as follows: The Board must present a statement of Dissolution of Division to the membership one month before voting begins; Dissolution of Division statement must demonstrate evidence that the Division has ceased being a useful addition to the ALA Student Chapter.
- Elections: Vote on the Constitution
- Votes are cast, count is taken. A unanimous vote to approve new Constitution has been cast.
- Elections: Vote on the Bylaws
- Vote to approve the bylaws is cast and is unanimous in favor of the approval and establishment of bylaws.
- The ACRL student group must present the Board with a petition signed by at least 6 members of the ALA national ACRL group. Petition to the Board for the Creation of an ACRL Student Division at UIUC submitted 31 March 2004 states as follows: As provided for in Article VII, Section 3 of the American Libraries Association Student Chapter at the University of Illinois Graduate School of Library and Information Science (ALA@UIUC) constitution, we the undersigned submit this petition to the Board for the creation of an American College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Student Division at the University of Illinois. Signed by 11 members (6 current national ACRL division members).
- The Board accepts the petition. The Alpha student division of ACRL has been born!
- Student Chapter of the Year Application
- Finished and will go out today, including the results of today's votes. We made 57% more profit this year on the t-shirt sale!
- Tote Bags
- The Board decided to do another run to give as gifts to guest lecturers. The other 20 will be available for sale at $12 per bag.
- End of the Year Party
- The Board has discussed several options for an end of the year social gathering, but we need some more help for the Social Committee. Please let Rachel know if you're interested in helping plan a party. Some suggestions were offered such as a co-hosting with other student groups or perhaps posting pleas to the Bulletin Boards.
- Upcoming Events
- Mary Dempsey will speak on her experiences as the Commissioner at the Chicago Public Library today from 1-2pm in rm 126, a Question and Answer session with refreshments is to follow.
- Nancy Gilfillan, President of the Illinois Library Association will be here on April 7th from 2-3 in rm 126 to talk to students about the ILA and the benefits of belonging to professional organizations. Refreshments to follow with Q & A session from 3-4.
- Carla Hayden, President of ALA will be here on Wednesday, April 14 speaking from 10-11:30 in room 131. If anyone has ideas for what they would like to hear Dr. Hayden address, please contact Rudy. As of now, Dr. Hayden will be speaking on the current issues facing librarians at a national level.
- Allen Lanham, dean of Eastern Illinois University Library and the President-elect of ILA will be here on Monday, April 26, speaking from 2-3 in room 126, with a Q&A to follow from 3-4. He will discuss his plans as future president of ILA as well as issues encountered throughout his career.
- Tour of Gerber/Hart Library, the Midwest's largest LGBT circulating library will take place on Sunday, April 4, 2004. Please RSVP to Ann Townsend by March 28th.
- Other Business
- Chairs: PLEASE get the Board your "how to" tips for the incoming committee chairs. What you wish you'd known, what you learned, etc. Send them to Diana Thompson.
- Please note on April 20th at 4:00, there will be a Library Consortium panel with the executive directors of the Lincoln Trail Library System as well as ILSCO.
