ALA General Meeting
January 27, 2004: Minutes
Rudy welcomes everyone and checks to see that due to the meeting time (7:30pm), snacks are acceptable in lieu of pizza. Everyone present nods approval.
A reminder to all that Mid-Winter reimbursement SORF forms are due back to Rachel Rohlf by no later than 8:00pm Wednesday 1/28.
- Committee Reminders
- Please try to schedule in as many areas as possible, including items of interest to Public Libraries, in particular Youth Services.
- Rudy would like to have committee reports of activities from last semester ASAP. Also, please get Rudy reports of committee activity for the year by March 15, 2004. Things to include in the year report are the programs already presented as well as those planned, number of attendees, number of planning meetings, other groups you worked with, etc.
- Chairs
- PLEASE keep liaison in the loop!
- Let the liaison know what you're planning, how much anticipated cost, when you're scheduling the events
- Please post any scheduled committee meetings on the ALA bulletin board so that anyone interested in attending may do so.
- Committee Reports
- LEEP
- The group is growing and LEEPers are starting to talk amongst themselves about ideas for the committee. Currently they are looking for a time to enter into a chat room to discuss ideas, as well as trying to get set up for next year.
- Community Outreach
- The committee met on Monday, 1/26 and will have a second meeting for those who were unable to make it on Thursday, 1/29. Many events are in the works right now, including both library and non-library related opportunities. Due to people's busy schedules, people seem to prefer one time events rather than ongoing projects. The project in progress is to spend a day assisting the Urbana Free Library move some of their stacks from the old wing into the new wing.
- Conference
- The committee met on Monday, 1/26 to discuss items for this semester. They have plans to set up a website for Annual similar to the one created for Mid-winter.
- If people are thinking of going to the conference, book the hotel rooms now! You can always cancel later, but they do tend to fill up quickly!
- The committee is looking into the possibility of renting out houses in a group, and will post discussion to the ALA board.
- Within the next two weeks, the committee would like to host a San Diego debrief where tips as well as "what we wish we'd known" will be discussed. All are welcome to attend, even if you did not go to San Diego. Check the ALA bulletin board for more information.
- The dates for the ALA Annual Conference are 6/24-6/29, and the early bird deadline for early registration will be here before we know it! We'll post information when we have it.
- We are hoping to be able to reimburse some of the early bird registrations for Annual this year, and will keep members posted.
- International
- A reminder that on February 5 from 11-1 there will be an International Student Panel. Come and learn about librarianship from a variety of countries.
- Professional Development
- The workshop series starts on Friday, Feb. 6, and will run all Fridays in Feb. as well as first Friday in March from 1-3 in Room 126. Flyers are up around the building, check it out! Included in the series are workshops on Interviewing, Resumes, Salary Negotiation, Public Library Management and Youth Services in Public Libraries. The first workshop will be given by Curt McKay on Friday Feb. 6 on the Job Search Process.
- Lecture
- The group will be meeting on Wednesday, January 6 at 6pm in Espresso Royal. The chair of the committee would like to hear from students as to what they're interested in hearing about from invited lecturers.
- Mary Dempsey, Commissioner of Chicago Public Library, has been invited to speak. Students voiced an interest in hearing about how the CPL system is changing, as well as interest in learning about the hierarchy of CPL
- ILA President: students would like to hear about who ILA is as an organization, and how can we as students become involved.
- ILA President Elect: Students would like to hear about administration in academic libraries, as well as what the incoming ILA president's agenda and goals for the next year of ILA are.
- Bridget Lemont: former State Librarian
- ALA President Elect: Will probably be here in September
- Panel Lectures: panel of alumni to speak about "what I wish I'd known". We're looking for recent grads to speak. If anyone knows of any recent grads in the area who'd be willing to speak, please contact Jen Stubben at stubben', 'uiuc.edu
- Other ideas may include someone to speak about: library buildings, library consortia, digital libraries and a public library panel.
- Field Trip
- Monday, Feb.2 there is a field trip to Hort Field Research Lab and the Illinois Archives
- Late Feb. there will hopefully be a field trip to the Illinois Correctional Center Collection
- A trip is being planned to the Gerber Heart Library in Chicago for either the 3rd or 4th of April
- Looking to do a trip up to the Art Institute in Chicago on Feb. 21
- Some other ideas in the works: trip to Harold Washington Center Children's Department, the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago newspaper archives including either Sun Times or Tribune
- Committee will check with SLA to make sure there is no overlap on trips
- Fundraising
- Amanda will be checking in with her committee to see if anyone is interested in doing a spring fundraiser
- Social Committee
- Some ideas being kicked around for possible social events include a bowling night and movie night
- ACRL
- The bylaws and revised constitution have been sent to ALA and we're waiting to hear back from them.
- Does anyone have any more ideas or suggestions for any of the committees? No.
- Student to Staff
- Details are listed on the ALA bulletin Board and ALA listserv
- Email Diana your essay by noon on Friday, January 31 in order to be considered
- We are allowed to send one student per year to ALA annual where that student will work a certain number of hours a day in exchange for ALA covering registration, hotel and a small per diem.
- We will be announcing the winner by early next week.
One final note of business: parking is free after 5 pm in the parking structure on 5th and Daniel, just in case the lot here at GSLIS is full!
