Professional Development Workshop SeriesTips and Tricks to finding and landing your dream job! This year's Professional Development Workshop Series will take place every Monday, from October 4th until November 1st. Presentations are from 1-3pm in GSLIS Room 131, unless otherwise noted below. All presentations that have not been given in the past will be archived on the LEEP server. Presentations that have been given in the past are already archived (links to archived presentations can be found below). 10/4 - "The Job Search Process" Assistant Dean Curt McKay will present strategies for identifying positions related to library and information science in a variety of organizations. He will discuss methods for researching and analyzing organizations where you seek employment. [Archived Audio of "The Job Search Process" by Curt McKay on October 4, 2004] 10/11 - "Writing Cover Letters and Resumes" Curt McKay will present the art of writing attractive and marketable cover letters and resumes that communicate the training and skills you will bring to an employer. Dale Silver and "Writing Cover Letters and Resumes" by Curt McKay on October 11, 2004] 10/18 - "Interviewing Skills" Curt McKay will present the skills and strategies necessary for effective interviewing in the library and information science fields. An emphasis will be placed on communicating your strengths to prospective employers while simultaneously interviewing them for critical information about the position they are seeking to fill. Interview etiquette will also be discussed. been invited to GSLIS to talk to students about their fields of practice.
There will be an attempt to cover as much as possible the broad scope
of LIS in the limited time available. After brief presentations by the
LIS professionals, students will have the opportunity to meet directly
with the professionals in small groups to learn more about particular
fields and types of work in LIS, including the job outlook and necessary
preparation for the a career in particular fields, and ask questions about

Professor Leigh Estabrook will present how to effectively negotiate salary and benefits after you have been offered a position, and why some of these topics should not be mentioned until after that offer has been received.
