ALA General Meeting Minutes

21 January 2005

Call To Order

President Marc Gartler called the meeting to order at 5:17 pm. An attendance sheet was passed around for those present to sign.

President Marc Gartler spoke about the new format for meetings and welcomed Nanette Wargo Donohue, the evening's speaker and a GSLIS graduate. Members of the Board introduced themselves as well as all at the meeting.

The new Website for our student chapter is finally finished thanks to Dyanna. Members are asked to look over the new site and make any comments. We also have a calendar on the site now that allows for committees to plan events and meetings with less worry about conflicts.

Minutes from November & December were approved with no changes.

Committee Reports

  • Fundraising - ? New Chair ? (Brian):

  • Field Trip - Jenny Benevento (Marc):
  • This semester we will be going to:
    --the Anheuser-Busch library and archive
    --the ALA HQ
--a tour of the UIUC Rare Book Room
--a tour of the special collections of the UIUC Education and Social Science Library, including their School Collection, Test Collection, Electronic Human Relations Area Files, the Mandeville Collection (Occult Studies), Arms Control Collection, and Curriculum Collection.
--The Kinsey Institute Library and Archive

And planned, but no dates yet set for:
    --an Illinois prison library
--A conservation lab at Poster Plus in the Chicago area which does all the preservation for the Art Institute Library.

At the end of last semester, we visited a community college library (Parkland) and a medical library and archive.

Our other recent cool thing is that half of our membership is LEEP students. All of them are Chicagoans who can help us co-sponsor and arrange events. Also, many of them work at libraries in the area and can give us an inside tour!

  • Social - Cheryl Costello (Mary Kate):
  • Comments about the Holiday party were all positive. This semester, more social events are in the works including a GSLIS "happy hour" on Fridays. Details to come.

  • Lecture - Adam Groves & Annette Lesak (Tim):
  • Upcoming Events:

-Committee Meeting, February 2nd, 5:15pm in the GSLIS Student Lounge.
-Michael Gorman, President-Elect of the ALA, late April 2005.
-Joyce Saricks, leader in the field of Reader's Advisory. April 5th, 2005. Tentatively set for 3 p.m. Room 131, GSLIS Building.

  • ACRL - Annie Paprocki (Mary Kate):
  • Everyone is invited to attend the upcoming ACRL@UIUC meeting on Monday, Feb. 7 from 5:15pm in rm. 131 GSLIS. Our faculty advisor, Sue Searing, will give a short talk about how to make the most of conference attendance and answer questions you may have about conferences, ACRL, etc. We will also introduce the new officers and plan upcoming events.

  • Community Outreach - ? New Chair? (Brian):
  • Community Outreach met Feb. 3 in the Center for Children's Books. We are going ahead with the project of creating a library for the Pavillion School for socially and mentally challenged youth, located at Church and Prospect in Champaign.

They have three, two-sided shelving units and some books, and are in need of:
    -More books
-Decoration of the library (posters, painting, eg.)
-Non-automated system of checking out books to students
-Processing of the books for general organization and circulation

In order to accomplish these goals, the committee has divided up some tasks, but we still need more volunteers.

    Tasks include:
-Evaluating and listing new books for selection
-Soliciting donations of materials and funds
    -Painting the library
    -Collecting donations

We're already looking at contacting some area stores for means of acquiring donations of books and paint. We're also contacting library jobbers for donations of envelopes and cards for use in circulation. We have also tentatively planned to collect books or funds outside of WalMart on Saturday, February 26th.

This is a large project and we will need more help than we have. This project is very likely to provide some valuable experience to those involved, which will be look good on resumes. We also would love to have more input on how to accomplish this goal.

If anyone is interested in joining up to tackle this challenge, please contact Suzy Piel (piel@uiuc.edu) or Lisa Weinstein (lweinste@uiuc.edu).

Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 24 in the Center for Children's Books at 5:15 PM.

  • LEEP - ? No Chair (Dyanna):
  • Insert notes here

  • Conference - Amber Prentiss (Dyanna):
  • The conference committee's first meeting of the spring semester is scheduled for February 15.

  • International - Jaclyn Bedoya (Marc):
  • The email to all international students in GSLIS has been sent, so hopefully we'll soon be able to get a directory going.

Once that's done, they'll use the directory to set up a discussion with some students who'll talk about who they are, what they're researching, and how libraries in their countries differ from here.

We're trying to set up a program on "How to assist international patrons." It would apply to public/school/academic libraries, and discuss keeping in mind cultural differences, talk about strategies for helping, etc.

We're also trying to find ways to volunteer with Boyd Rayward's conferences that he's putting on.

Still on the backburner is trying to volunteer at the International Relations Round Table guest reception at ALA Annual - we were told they'd get back to us, but they haven't. We'd like for it to happen, though.

  • Professional Development - Katie Kopchok (Candle):
  • The Prof Devt Committee is setting up a brown bag lunch session on "Conference Attendance 101", providing information to students on how to make the most of their conference experiences. A panel of 7-8 LIS professionals will share their experiences. It is on Monday, February 28th from 1-2pm in room 126 GSLIS.

We are also contacting Lorelle Swader, Director of the Office for Human Resource Development and Recruitment for ALA about coming to speak in March or April.

    New Business

We are still in need of a chair for the LEEP committee. We plan on having an on-campus chair and a LEEP student act as chair. The committee is open to organizing anything the chairs are interested in. If anyone is interested, please email the board.
