ALA General Meeting

February 13, 2006

• Introduction of Speaker: Cherié Weible, Acting head of IRRC at the University

• entered Librarianship as a second profession
• advises to find a mentor
• volunteer to intern on a committee, sit in on meetings at conferences (sit around outside of their tables)
• join New Members Round Table (NMRT) and start with poster presentations to gain confidence/experience
• when publishing, keep a cohesive body of work
• Favorite Part? Data collection, discovering the results
• Least Favorite Part? Revisions... but don't be worried about editing your work

• Treasurer's Report

o Approx. $1,044 in RSO account. More to come as round two of the t-shirts are being sold now. Deadline Friday, Feb. 17th.

• Meetings: Approval of December and January Minutes

o Best day/time survey results show Monday evenings best for most people!

• Social Committee

o Friday, Feb. 17th at Krannert Center: Tons O' Fun Band, free admission, food & drinks available there for purchase. Meeting at GSLIS at 5pm to walk there.

• Lecture Committee

o Fran Miksa - to speak on cataloging, March 6th at 5:30pm, room 126 GSLIS (refreshments begin at 5pm)
o Bill Hamer - High Strung is beginning their annual tour. Bill is open to dates to come speak, post ideas to the ALA bulletin board
o Tom Lipinski - Legal Issues, March 9th SLA ice cream discussion (5pm room 131 GSLIS), March 10th "To Mentor or to Monitor..." lecture (314 Illini Union, 10-11:30am)

• International Committee

o Dr. Weech will speak at an upcoming meeting, Thursday March 9th

• Conference Committee

o Julie & Karla gathering information on people attending National conference. Planning meeting with Sue Searing to talk about conference attendance.

• ACRL

o Bake sale coming up in March
o Proposed Bylaws change available, email Katie to see them. Will mean a change to ALA's Bylaws too (coming soon).

• Announcements

o Committee chairs, send reports of minutes to Katie (kkopchok@uiuc.edu). Remember to ask the ALA Publicity Officers to advertise your event at least one week in advance
o March 9th Meeting with Dr. Weech. April 3rd meeting - any speaker suggestions? April 24th, last meeting of the year.
o Student Chapter of the Year Award! Time to write-up our nomination, will need summaries from chairs.

• LEEP Events

o LEEP Weekend coming up, schedule online. We'll plan the annual LEEP breakfast (Social Committee) and have a table at the Dinner.
o Volunteers will be needed, more info to come.
o We hope to have a bigger presence at the LEEP Bootcamp over the summer, as well.
